Christopher - Blue & Gold Macaw - Ara Ararauna

This is Christopher. "He" belonged to an older gentleman who had gone into the hospital and then passed away. Cleaning up someones life after they have passed away is always stressful for family. It's even worse when the closest relative lives on the other side of the country. Not knowing what to do with such a large bird, they reached out to us to try to find a new home. Taking a big bird back home to the other side of the country wasn't really an option, especially when driving. We decided to take Christopher in at least on a temporary basis. If nothing else we could get him checked out by a vet and then find a better home for him. It's hard when birds lose their human so we wanted to help out in any way that we could. Christopher's nails were in rough shape when we picked him up, so we made a quick stop on the way home and got some grooming done. Since we really had no history other than what we were told, we had a DNA test done at the same time.

It turns out that Christopher is is a girl. Settling in was a little rough. This beautiful bird didn't eat for the first 4 days she was here. One afternoon after a frustrating attempt to get her to try any kinds of food that was offered we remembered that the previous owner had some guitars laying around so we played some music. Within a few minutes she started to dance on the floor. When we put her back in her cage, she went right for a food dish and started eating. What a relief. Seems like this girl just needed to relax and feel safe again. The power of music, right?

A few weeks after she got settled in we made a trip to the vet for a general checkup and after pointing out her juvenile eyes, the vet believes she was about a year and a half old. Whatever her true age is, she's in fantastic condition and has such a sweet personality. We discover something new about her almost every day. Since we discovered that Christopher is a girl, we tried various changes to the name to see if one would stick. We tried Christ, Christina, and Tina. None of that works. She will answer only to Christopher so that's what we're sticking with. Sometimes we hear her in the other room saying, "Christopher?, Christopher, Christopher!" When someone comes to the door she will yell out HELLO! and sometimes says it when the phone rings.
